Some of the patients in addition to renal failure have condition of increased production of oxalates. The removal of excessive oxalates during dialysis poses a challenge. Jeff is trying to explore a possible alternative solution to control the levels in these patients.
Calcium oxalate (CaC2O4) is relatively, a small molecule(mol. wt.128) and has a good clearance of 115ml/min for 1.73M surface area dialyzer. To achieve higher clearances, dialyzers of larger surface area are available. Unfortunately, the generation of oxalates in such patients, outpaces removal by dialyzers. Therefore, the recommended modality apart from the medications, is the more frequent dialysis to lower the level of oxalates.
