I've been to conferences where I've heard that bacteria can grow exponentially if not nipped in the bud right away, and I just learned first hand just how true that is. As stated in previous postings from myself and my colleague, we have been having LAL problems. Well, those problems later included rising coliform, water-pseudomonas aeruginosa and plate counts. Even though we were disinfecting with Minncare weekly since the problems with LAL began, the other lab tests showed we had bugs that were relentless. As a last option before investing big $$ to modify our treatment system, I held an all night vigil in my water room. I pumped a water/bleach mixture (100ppm) into my loop for 20 minutes, and let it dwell for another hour. Then I rinsed the loop clear of the bleach and put minncare into the RO's and loop. I ran the minncare through the loop until my mixture got so warm it caused my RO's to shut down and let it dwell for an hour. Then I ran the minncare through again until it again shut the RO's down. I did this for 9 hours.
I just got my water results back and I now have 0 coliform, 0 water-pseudomonas, and 0 plate count. My LAL's are down to .25 EU/mL too.
This has been a good lesson for us here. You have to disinfect regularly and watch your lab results for possible problems. Do not underestimate the bacteria. I hope some other individuals reading this have gained something too.
